About
Expertise at the Intersection of Health & Exploration

I’m John M. Dabbs, a Travel Correspondent, photojournalist, and public health/EMS specialist reporting from destinations across the United States and around the world. My work is grounded in the belief that travel is not just movement — it’s context, culture, and connection. I approach every assignment with a respect for place and a curiosity about the people who shape it.
Before I began writing about travel, I spent decades working in emergency medical services and public health. As a paramedic, mountain rescue instructor, and MPH-trained specialist, I learned how people respond to crisis, how communities adapt, and how landscapes influence human experience. That background still shapes my storytelling today.
My reporting sits at the intersection of culture, nature, resilience, and public health. Whether I’m documenting trail towns rebuilding after a hurricane, exploring sustainable travel along Mexico’s Baja Sur, or spending time in mountain communities across the Southern Appalachians, I focus on how people live, work, rebuild, celebrate, and carry stories forward.
As a photojournalist, I pair narrative with field imagery — landscapes, portraits, environmental scenes, and cultural moments that bring readers closer to the story. My work has appeared in NewsBreak, Modern Traveler, EMS World, Medium, illuminem, and other outlets.
I continue to draw from my EMS and public-health background when reporting on safety, environmental change, disaster recovery, and the realities facing communities shaped by climate and geography. This blend of expertise allows me to write with accuracy, empathy, and a grounded, firsthand perspective.
If you’re looking for a correspondent who combines global travel experience with real-world field knowledge, you’ll find that mix here. I invite you to explore my portfolio and reach out for editorial assignments, destination coverage, or collaborative travel opportunities.
